Not All ACM Is The Same: What To Look for When Choosing An ACM
Aluminum Composite Material, or ACM, has become one of the industry's most versatile and widely used sign substrates. ACM is widely available and distributed by most sign distributors. However not all ACM is the same.
7 Features To Look For When Choosing A Quality ACM
- Engineering
- Digitally Printable or Not?
- EZ Peel Liner
- Extensive Product Portfolio
- Superior Bonding
- Paint Quality
- Warranty
ACM vs. Other Composites
Rather than using traditional MDO plywood, aluminum, and other composites, sign fabricators are switching to ACM because it is more durable and versatile. Sign shops also like that ACM can be routed, cut with panel saws, and easily made into smaller sizes or sign blanks.
1. Engineering
Explore the core. A lightweight, recycled pure PE core is free of impurities offering both strength and flexibility vs other cores that use “fillers” or stiffening agents. A true PE plastic core does not contain fillers/stiffening additives that can dull router bits and saw blades, which can cost money and slow production time. ACM manufactured in Asia tends to contain fillers, while European-made ACM is manufactured with a true PE core.
2. Digitally Printable or Not?
Digitally Printable ACM is designed for better ink adhesion with quality vibrant prints, allowing you assured print results and increased production and versatility with projects. Special optimized coatings help inks adhere to the substrates with quality results.
3. EZ Peel Liner
Low tac protective liner easily removes from the substrate, speeding up print time and production. A clear liner is used with European engineering and offers easier removability than black-backed liners of Asian manufactured ACM.
4. Extensive Product Portfolio
Find an ACM supplier that offers a wide variety of thicknesses, sizes, and finishes so that you can find the right solution for your project.
5. Superior Bonding
Advanced bonding adhesive offers superior bonding between the aluminum skins and PE core. This adds stability and advanced fabrication functionality.
6. Paint Quality
Polyester (PE) paint is the standard paint used for most ACM. PE, HDPE, PVDF, and FEVE finishes are also available to meet many requirements. Does your ACM supplier offer a variety of paint finishes?
7. Warranty
There are many varying warranties offered based on the level of quality of the ACM. Standard ACM in the market will offer warranties for up to 5 years (based on conditions of use).
